The Photography Section of Nature Vancouver holds a Photo Competition every year in March that is limited to Members Only. All photographs should depict natural history subjects excluding tame animals and cultivated plants. Evidence of the 'hand of man' will be allowed in exceptional circumstances but will reduce the chance of such a photograph becoming a winner. All the entries and results of the competition are presented at the March meeting of Nature Vancouver. Members may enter a maximum of ten digital photographs and compete in a maximum of three of the five categories. Up to ten photos may be entered in one category or spread over two or three categories. Not more than ten pictures and not more than three categories. Images created in the computer are not eligible. Example: two or more photographs that are combined in the computer.

The Categories:
1. Birds 2. Mammals 3. Botany 4. Entomology and Spiders 5. Other Natural History

The subjects eligible for the last category include reptiles, marine biology, geology and landscape. No photos of birds, plants, mammals, insects or spiders in this category please.

The judges will select a best in show (award $80.00) and a first (award $40.00) in each of the categories.

In addition to the above five categories a sixth category will be open to members of the Young Naturalists Club only up to the age of 14. Any natural history subject is eligible for this category and the winner will receive the Al Grass Award.

It is preferred that nature subjects be presented in their natural environment. Evidence of the hand of man will not disqualify an entry but will lower its chances of a win.

Instructions for Entries:
Entries are accepted every year after January 1. Please e-mail your entries to Ron Long.   Please contact Ron at 604 469-1651 for more information.

By submitting your photos to the Nature Vancouver Photography Competition it is understood that you agree to allow their reproduction on the Facebook, the website and in the Nature Vancouver publications, Vancouver Naturalist and Discovery with proper credit. We need more vertical shots to use on the covers.

To Nature Vancouver photographers

From Ron Long

Each year a large number of really excellent photographs are submitted to the annual photo contest. It has always bothered me that these great pictures are shown only once at a Nature Vancouver meeting and then most are never seen again. This year, with your help, that is going to change.

VanDusen Gardens have agreed to allow us to mount a print show in the gallery of their new building. This will allow many additional people to enjoy your work.

After the photo competition a jury will select approximately sixty photographs for possible inclusion in the print show and I will notify the photographer. Photographers will be asked to pay for printing, matting and framing of their work and they will retain ownership of the finished framed photo after the show. Of course participation is optional.

To insure consistent presentation of the exhibition Nature Vancouver will handle the printing, matting and framing (without glass). By buying materials in bulk costs will be kept low. High quality prints will be mounted in single white mats with matt-silver frames.

The finished size will be 16”x20” and will cost the photographer $98.

Since photographers have ownership of the framed prints they have the opportunity to price and sell copies of their work. VanDusen will look after collecting monies and in return will take 15% of the sale price. Keep in mind that you may very well sell multiple copies of your piece and sales are conditional on the print remaining on display until the end of the show.

Photographers will be asked to supply a short paragraph containing interesting facts about the subject of their photograph. This information will be used on the label.

The print exhibition will run for six weeks from October 1 to November 15, 2013.
