Trip Date: Aug 22, 2009
Trip Location: Brother's Creek Area, West Vancouver
Today's interpretive hike with David Cook took us to the solitary Hollyburn Fir at the Brother's Creek area. Morning count revealed a group of 32 people attending the geology and ecology focused walk north of the British Properties. We began from the trailhead at the Millstream St. and Eyremount Rd. intersaction and followed the Brewis Trail. We crossed the Baden Powell Trail and continued north meeting with the giant fir.
We learned how this tree was rediscovered by Randy Stoltmann (1962-1994) in 1985 when he was researching old growth trees for his Registry of Big Trees project [http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hre/bigtrees/]. We had our lunch next to the fir and had our picture taken by a group of eager photographers.
On the trail we stopped frequently to appreciate various plants and mushrooms. Amongst these were Red Alder, Douglas Fir, Grand Fir, Red Cedar, Yew, Stink currant (Ribes bracteosum), Foam flower (Tiarella trifoliata), Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis), Hooker's fairybells (Disporum hookeri), Devil's club (Oplopanax horridus), Reishi and Chicken of the woods.
