Ascent of Mt. Strachan, Cypress Provincial Park

Full-day (5-6 hrs.) geology hike from the down-hill ski area at Cypress Bowl up the Collins Ski Run to the peak of Mt. Strachan (elevation gain 500 m). We will also make a short side-trip to look at an area of sub-alpine pasture, recovering back to forest after an ancient lightning fire. The geological highlight will be the southern peak of Mt. Strachan where the glaciation has smoothed a remarkable pavement over metamorphic rocks of the Bowen Island Group, the oldest rocks to be found in the area.

Bring lunch, water and dress for changing weather conditions. The trails are rough and very slippery because of the loose, rubbly surface of the ski run. Deep-tread hiking boots with ankle support are essential. Sneakers not recommended. Walking poles are recommended for the descent. The route is exposed to the sun so wear a hat. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at McDonalds, Park Royal, West Vancouver to carpool. Leader: David Cook, cookeco2@yahoo.com or 604-924-0147.
