Have you ever wondered what the forests of the North Shore looked like prior to the logging era? Join David Cook for a leisurely walk up the west side of Mosquito Creek to 24 hectares of old growth redcedar forest with veteran trees up to 3m diameter. This old growth forest is located between 500 & 700 metres elevation on the south-east slope of Grouse Mountain on District of North Vancouver land. The elevation gain for the hike is about 300 metres. The hike up to the main area of old growth forest takes 2 to 3 hours with many stops to view the natural history of the area. A highlight on the way will be a fragment of old growth forest with the largest known population of Pacific yew trees in the Vancouver area. We will lunch at the base of the redcedar giants returning no later than 3 pm. The trail is initially steep and there are many slippery sections on corduroy skid roads, so hiking boots with ankle support are essential. Bring lunch, water and dress for changes in weather.
Meet at the top of Skyline Drive, North Vancouver at 10 am. Skyline Drive is approached via Montroyal Boulevard which is accessed from either Delbrook Avenue or Capilano Road. For further details contact David Cook at 604-924-0147.
