Shooting Stars in Richmond

PostDateIcon Wed, 2009/06/03 - 3:37pm | PostAuthorIcon Visitor

On Sunday the 31st of May, on a walk along the dike from # 3 Road east to Finn Slough, I found about five shooting stars in flower. They were about 100 meters west of the Crown Packaging plant on the river side of the dike and growing out of a thick bed of sedges. Any idea about the species? This is the first time I have seen any shooting stars in lower mainland.

I think they are a form of Dodecatheon pulchellum. Will Paulik showed me some in the marsh near the south end of Gilbert Road many years ago. I do not know if they still grow there. They were considerably larger than the D. pulchellum in the interior or at north end of Bowen Island.
